Country Livin'

Panama is a buggy country; there are ants everywhere, flying termites after the first rains start, beatles, june bugs during June, crickets, grasshoppers and cucarachas (among hundreds of other creatures). Leave something edible on the kitchen and it is sure to swarm with some kind of insect. This is doubly so in the interior of Panama; point being, I have been learning to co-exist with creatures I wouldn't usually find in the city. Creepy crawlies like my dear old friend the Central American Fer-de-Lance, who we have managed to find IN the house three different times.

Don't feel sorry for the dead snake. I am not a snake charmer, and I don't believe that any creature should be killed, but when I find it in the bathroom sink, it kinda doesn't leave me a choice (and I didn't kill it, my boyfriend did). I was walking to the bathroom when I saw the female dachshund barking directly at something on the floor with a very insistent bark. She would not avert her eyes away from whatever it was. I mentioned it to A, and he walked out and then yelled out, "Not another fucking snake!". Which is when I ran to the bedroom and locked myself in (hi, coward).

The good thing is that besides venomous creatures that could or not possibly end my life, there are others, much more easy going on the eyes and not of the life ending variety like, ARMADILLOS!

This little guy was caught by the caretaker who stood very still as the little guy walked by. He was swept up by his tail and placed in the back of an open ended cart so that everyone could "ooohhh" and "aaaaahhh" over the cool little dude. We think he is a juvenile as he was rather easy-going and on the smaller side. He was let go back into the meadows after half an hour (traumatized for life, I'm sure...."Guys, fucking HUMANS grabbed me and stroked my ARMOR. It was gross").

He was full of ticks, pobrecito.

I've also seen little bunnies here and there, though they are shy creatures and probably fear for their lives what with ferocious dachshunds and chihuahuas roaming the land.

Don't let his size fool ya! He's an absolutely vicious cricket killer.

Of course, there are also beautiful creatures...

And lovely plants and flowers....
